Due to the depletion of coventional energy resources and high oil prices, renewable energy has drawn more and more attention in recent years. Wind power as one of the most popular renewable energy technologies has grown rapidly into a mature technology and booming global industry.
In China, with its rich wind resources, wind power was chosen as an important source of renewable energy to rebalance the energy mix, combat global warming and ensure energy security. The Chinese government has sucessfully implemented a series of policies to encourage wind power development. Today, China has already become one of the biggest markets for the wind power industry worldwide.
The extremely rapid development, boosted by the development of large scale wind power clusters backed by the government, has caused a number of issues troubling the fledgling wind power industry, affecting the efficiency of wind power generation and threatening the sustained development of wind power in China. The issues are manifold, ranging from deficiencies in wind farm project planning over lack of due diligence in wind turbine design, testing and production processes to issues with regard to grid integration.
In order to support the healthy and long-term development of wind power as one of the future pillars in its energy mix, a few nternational assistance projects strive to support the development of wind power and thereby facilitate the reduction of China's carbon footprint.
In this section you will find information on international projects supporting the sustained development of wind power in China. These projects are commonly funded by foreign governments or international organizations and conducted by development cooperation agencies or designated project entities in cooperation with local implementation partners.
The China Wind Power Project (CWPP), that administers the CWPC-website, and the Wind Environment Research and Training (WERT) Project are two projects by the German Development Cooperation (GTZ) also introduced in this section.
